The Foxs Hole is a newly refurbished pub formally known as the Carlbury Arms in Piercebridge near Darlington. It’s different; it’s not the usual country traditional pub. It’s more like a city pub that you may find in Leeds, a reclaimed warehouse style pub. Different, in the sense it’s not what you expect when visiting a country pub in County Durham - a short distance from North Yorkshire.

We watched the renovation with interest; the theme seems to be reclaimed warehouse, dull green outside with copper highlights. It looks like an old photograph from the outside but I think it is quite good – it’s different. Brings to mind a movie set or a Disney themed pub.

Inside; again the warehouse theme continues with industrial lighting, wood planked floors and clipboards as menus. Great and interesting but I keep thinking, should this style be here in the country? Time will tell and I’m the guy that said iPads won’t take off. It’s like that I don’t know if it will work, I don’t know if the general public will like it. It appeals to a younger crowd.

Beer was plenty of choices, hand pull bitter which we enjoyed and all the other usual drinks, nothing unusual. Bar snacks were inventive based on traditions like scotch eggs but way too expensive - £4.00. We are not in London. Sunday lunch is reasonable at £14. The dining area was busy and you can look into the kitchen.

The place was busy when we called on a mid Sunday afternoon, the welcome was poor, and we felt like a number. The atmosphere was OK, but the acoustic spoiled it. The warehouse style allows lots of echoes therefore any screech of a chair, a loud laugh or chink of cutlery on a plate resonated around the rooms to distraction.

Its early days for this adventuress pub model. Time will tell. At this point Id recommend calling in for a pint, the beer is good. It’s the sort of place you could have a casual business meeting in a clear and clean non fussy environment. Don’t know about Wi-Fi but I’d recommend it as soon as possible.

FUNNY COMMENT: Fox's what?

FINAL WORD: At point of writing the A67 from Darlington was closed due to a land-slide. From Darlington follow the diversion signs.
